Samsung has made a significant breakthrough in the field of foldable technology with its latest achievement. The company’s 7.6″ foldable panel, similar to the one used in the Galaxy Z Fold 5, has successfully passed the rigorous tests outlined by the US Department of Defense Test Method Standard, also known as MIL-STD-810.
This certification is a testament to the product’s ability to operate without any issues in harsh environments, including extreme temperature fluctuations and external impacts. Samsung Display proudly announced that it is the first company to achieve this military-grade validation for foldable OLED panels worldwide.
To meet the MIL-STD-810 compliance, the panel had to demonstrate resilience in extreme conditions. For example, it proved its functionality after being covered with a 6 mm ice layer for four hours following exposure to water at -10 degrees Celsius. The panel also performed flawlessly during temperature oscillations ranging from -32 to 63 degrees Celsius, with each extreme temperature maintained for two hours and each test repeated three times.
In addition, the panel underwent a stress test that involved dropping it 26 times from a height of 4 feet (1.22 meters), simulating real-world usage scenarios. Impressively, the panel withstood pressure equivalent to 10.5G through rapid rotations.
A representative from Samsung Display emphasized to Korean media outlets that durability is not a concern for foldable devices, dispelling a common misconception. This MIL-STD-810 certification is expected to open up new possibilities for the use of foldable panels in various industries in the near future.
With this achievement, Samsung has once again demonstrated its commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and providing innovative solutions to meet the needs of consumers and industries alike.
