According to a recent report by Canalys, Mediatek emerged as the top chipset provider in the smartphone market during the fourth quarter of 2023, experiencing a remarkable 21% year-over-year increase in device shipments. This significant growth solidifies Mediatek’s position as a key player in the industry.
While Mediatek took the lead in terms of device shipments, Apple claimed the top spot in revenue for Q4 2023. Devices powered by Apple’s silicon, exclusive to iPhones, generated an impressive $87 billion in revenue, marking a 20% surge compared to the previous year. Apple’s strong performance in revenue highlights the brand’s loyal customer base and their willingness to invest in high-quality devices.
The report also highlighted Qualcomm as one of the leading chipset providers in the market. Qualcomm’s expertise in mobile technology continues to be recognized, contributing to their success in the industry.
Another notable mention in the report was Huawei-owned HiSilicon, which garnered $7 billion in revenue from 7 million units. This achievement was primarily driven by sales of nova 12 and Mate 60 phones featuring the Kirin 9000S chipset, priced at an average of $1000 per device.
Additionally, phones equipped with Unisoc chipsets witnessed a remarkable 24% year-over-year increase in both revenue and volume. This growth was particularly evident in devices under the Transsion umbrella, which includes popular brands such as Infinix, Tecno, and iTel. These devices have gained popularity in emerging markets.
However, Samsung Semiconductor faced challenges during this period, experiencing a significant decline in shipments of phones featuring Exynos chips, leading to a drop in quarterly revenue. Despite this setback, Canalys predicts a slight uptick in the first half of 2024, buoyed by increased sales of devices like the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 powered by the Exynos 2400 chipset. Furthermore, the imminent launch of the Galaxy A55 featuring the Exynos 1480 chipset is expected to contribute to Samsung’s recovery.
Overall, the Canalys report provides valuable insights into the performance of various chipset providers in the smartphone market, highlighting the dynamic nature of the industry and the fierce competition among key players.
