Just over two years since the launch of Files v2, the team is thrilled to announce the release of Files v3.
This significant update marks a major stride towards creating the ultimate file manager for Windows. The project has been developed openly, allowing the community to actively participate and provide valuable feedback. We owe our progress thus far to the unwavering support of our dedicated users and the open-source community, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been involved in this journey.
What’s New in v3
Design Enhancements
With a focus on preserving the familiar user experience while modernizing key aspects of the UI, the design updates in v3 aim to ensure users feel at home with the app they love. The logo has also been refreshed, with the community overwhelmingly favoring the familiar yellow color. Additionally, icons for different versions of Files have been updated for easier identification.
Redesigned Sidebar
The sidebar has been completely overhauled, streamlining the interface by removing icons from headers and indentations from child items. Pinned folders are now highlighted with icons, and the file area features rounded corners with adjusted background opacity for improved distinction.
Improved File Operations Experience
Users can now track the progress and speed of file operations in the Status Center through a newly introduced graph feature.
Enhanced Office Document Previews
In addition to supporting previewing Office documents, Files v3 now also allows for previewing file formats with a registered shell preview handler.
Introducing the Command Palette
A new addition, the Command Palette, enables users to quickly and easily search and execute commands. Accessible via ctrl shift p or by typing > into the address bar, it provides a list of available commands or allows users to type their own queries.
Background Operation Option
A new feature allows users to keep Files open in the background when closing the last window, enhancing startup performance. Note that enabling this option will utilize system resources even when the app is in the background.
